Job Details:

  • Reporting to the Manager of Microbiology, this position is responsible for technical and administrative supervision of the Microbiology Section of the department and its staff (16 FTE's).
  • In collaboration with the Manager, the Supervisor will assist in maintenance of CAP accreditation, maintenance of the analytical systems of the laboratory, monitoring the quality control program, inventory management, directing subordinate personnel, inventory management.

Requirements:

A. JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Good working knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the types of instruments and analytical systems, manual and automated used in the laboratory.
  • Good working knowledge of the operation of computerized data processing and laboratory information systems.
  • The ability to direct and supervise effectively a large group of technologists and/or support personnel.
  • The ability to organize and coordinate a variety of complex tasks to achieve consistent and efficient production and delivery of high quality laboratory work.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

B. EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree of Science or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.

C. EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical experience of 4 or more years working in a clinical laboratory. At least 2 of these years must have been in a leadership role in a hospital laboratory of similar size, range of tests, instrumentation and workload.

  • Acts as Lead Vascular Technologist for the Non-Invasive Vascular Program.

Vascular Technologist

  • Works independently using extensive knowledge of vascular anatomy and physiology to perform thorough and accurate noninvasive vascular testing procedures (e.g., carotid duplex, arterial duplex, venous duplex, abdominal duplex, and noninvasive physiological arterial testing) on patients as ordered, and under the direction of the medical director of the Vascular Lab.
  • Independently operates sonographic equipment, follows established laboratory protocols, acquires high quality images and accurate information, and evaluates sonograms.
  • Generates preliminary reports of test results. Analyzes results and appropriately documents all findings, measurements, and dates necessary to complete exam.
  • Greets and escorts patients into exam room, confirms appropriate clinical data, and obtains patient history.
  • Provides for the emotional, physical well-being and safety of the patient while maintaining strict standards of patient confidentiality.
  • Documents procedures as needed. Assists with the distribution of quality assurance reports. Maintains workflows by ensuring that reports are read and reviewed by the reading Cardiologist within the required timeframe.
  • Identifies equipment malfunctions and reports problems to the department supervisor in a timely manner.
  • May confirm and schedule patient appointments and add or cancel tests as needed.

Qualifications:

This position will require a skilled, independent professional acting under the supervision of the Genitourinary (GU) Pathology Service Chief and Technical Supervisor Frozen Section to perform a wide variety of high complexity tasks in processing of the full range of human surgical pathology specimens.
GU Pathology Support: Will act as an integral part of the GU pathology team. Collation/integration of draft elements (e.g. laboratory values, cystoscopy reports, imaging) of reports, including review of clinical and prior laboratory findings and review of cases at sign-out with the attending pathologist and/or the GU pathology team (includes attendings, fellows, and residents). Assistance with special study orders, tissue (block) ordering, slide retrieval. Formal instruction and guidance (education) of pathology residents and fellows in the handling of tissue and collation of data; grossing manual updates. Communication with outside hospitals and providers for second opinion cases to facilitate acquisition of materials or clinical history and once final results are completed, communicates results with outside referring providers and centers when required.
