Manager, Laboratory Information SystemsFull-time, permanent positionLocation: Boston Teaching Hospital This position is open due to the upcoming retirement of the incumbent.GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services and the Chief of Pathology & Lab Medicine, the Manager of Laboratory Information Systems is responsible for providing a blend of analytical and technical understanding and expertise necessary to support the implementation, development, maintenance and functionality of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services' Information Systems and other related interfaces. Provides and develops training and written procedures for users of the LIS which include Clinical Lab Support, Chemistry, Hematology, HLA, Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Molecular Pathology, Surgical Pathology, Histology, Autopsy and Cytology. Provides high-level data access and reporting from these systems. Supervises other LIS analysts that may be employed in the department. The supervisor will also utilize the capabilities of the LIS and billing interfaces to maximize opportunities for automation of billing activities in the department.JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to interface effectively with both department and clinical staff. Must have the ability to work without direct supervision; make independent judgments and multi-task. Demonstrates working knowledge of the operations of the laboratory, hospital, billing and finance. Demonstrate a working knowledge of interface file formats. Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of hardware systems and architecture. Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate and prioritize tasks and project components. Ability to maintain confidential medical information. Able to organize data for the LIS utilizing standard medical technology knowledge of how the laboratory operates.EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent with intermediate knowledge of laboratory medicine. Certification by a laboratory-accrediting agency such as ASCP or NCA preferred but not required.EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of experience in a hospital laboratory setting with a focus on laboratory information systems. 2+ years management experience with multiple direct reports in a LIS or comparable IT environment.An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.All those interested and qualified can contact John Baumann at 978-941-4206, or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
