Project Manager - Hospital Laboratory
Full-time permanent position
Location: Boston Teaching Hospital

General Summary:

This position is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and delivering project activities through the entire project life cycle. This position requires significant capacity to manage competing objectives, to prioritize, and to communicate information in clear and unambiguous terms to management and end user personnel. This position reports to the Director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.


  • Facilitates problem-solving and decision-making activities within the scope of the project and change management process, taking reasonable and prudent actions to accomplish agreed upon project objectives under minimal direct supervision.
  • Creates, organizes, and communicates with contemporary project management artifacts including, but not limited to: Project Charter, Business Case, Business Requirements, Gantt Chart, Stakeholder Analysis, and SWOT analysis.
  • Fully documents objectives, deliverables, budget, and timelines associated with relevant projects.
  • Responsible for change control and documentation.
  • Assists other laboratory staff with leading their own projects on PM principles, practices, and methods; transfers knowledge as appropriate or directed.
  • Schedules meetings, events, and updates; responsible for coordinating availability of stakeholders, proponents, subject matter experts, and external parties as necessary.
  • Regularly provides project information to committees, project sponsors and department leadership; may develop materials and present project requests to institutional committees and oversight bodies to receive approval, project direction and input.
  • Helps prepare for all applicable inspections as directed by leadership.
  • Participates actively in hospital and department process improvement projects.
  • Develops working knowledge of specific laboratory administrative and technical processes by on-going engagement with subject matter experts.
  • Manages issues and risks in a timely manner; escalate as appropriate.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Project Management, Information Technology or equivalent.
  • PMP Certification preferred.
  • 3+ years as a Project Manager in a hospital setting. Experience with clinical laboratory preferred. Some experience with Point-of-Care Testing preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with PM artifacts.
  • Must have strong business acumen with the ability to work with people from diverse functional backgrounds and build relationships across the organization.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups who may not be familiar with the project or project management process.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as part of a team.
  • Skilled at using Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Must be detail oriented with strong analytic/problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to work with minimal oversight.
  • Some knowledge of IT systems: HL7/interface/LIS experience a plus.
